reply to reply to KDE 4.1 experience

Fathi blogged a reply to Peter in where he kind of “tagged” me to also reply. So I will.

  • you can’t configure size and appearance of the panel. This is a long-standing problem, but I thought it was fixed.

You can as Fathi writes, but it is … a bit well hidden.

  • KMail doesn’t interact well with encrypted IMAP accounts. I didn’t try much beyond that, because I have no accounts that are not affected by that.

My encrypted IMAP accounts works without any problems on 3 seperate machines. (home workstation, laptop, work workstation). There is a slight packaging issue here though, not all shlibs were proper bumped, so make sure you have 4.0.80-something of all packages.

  • Various kicker widgets don’t appear to be available for KDE 4 (yet?).

You have moon applet and fifteen puzzle in extragear-plasma. Eyes-widget seems gone though. Not a big loss. (Or which ones are you talking about?)

– and yes, I do see kde4 in Lenny.

I miss the applet which shows system usage. I won’t call it a a must-have, but I’d love to have it back :D

    hi :)

about kicker’s widget availability, maybe you can tell me if the “Quick browser” applet (that show you the content of a directory though a menu) is in KDE4 ?

    cheers

Huh? The panel resizing is fixed. Click the cashew that’s on the panel and it brings up the dialog to change the height, change the width, and set limits for an adaptable width. It’s not intuitive (at least not on my last-week’s-build), but the functionality is there.

And extragear-plasma doesn’t exist any more. check out trunk/KDE/kdeplasmoids (where they all moved to).

    @Superstoned,

Not as fully-featured as the KDE 3.x one (at least not yet), but there is a system-monitor plasmoid available on kde-look.org (http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/System+Status?content=74891)

Personally, I only miss Kima and Kirocker…maybe Kaquarium…and a quicklauncher that works and is easy to use (although not as useful as it was in KDE3, considering the favs section in the default menu).

  5. VE says:

I hope proxy support is considered a blocker for 4.1 in Lenny. Everything else that’s missing I can work around.

  6. Cyrill Helg says:

I hope that kdelirc will be ported.

  7. Phil Urich says:

What I’m really missing, personally, is the RadialMap fileview! No, seriously. It’s both rather useful for me and also a huge “hey look at how cool and sci-fi linux is” for me to show to my non-linux using friends.

I disagree about kicker, though; it’s better but it’s far from fixed in terms of features. That it’s a bit unintuitive isn’t the problem; the options just simply don’t work on my dual-monitor (twinview) setup for moving it around, whereas when I switch things around in KDE3 it both works AND does so with just some click-dragging instead of selections in a menu. That issue is singlehandedly stopping me from using KDE4 full time, to be entirely honest. That being said I’m neither bitter nor impatient.
