VPS with large storage

Dear Lazyweb

I’m looking to retire my basement server. It is a athlon 700MHz processor with 384mb ram and 200G harddrive (of which 40 or so is used)

I don’t currently need a more beefy machine for this, so I kind of thought of just going for a small virtual private server.
Unfortunately, in order to get a VPS with more than 40G space on places like linode, gandi and slicehost I also need to buy much more ram and cpu power than I actually need.

Are there any vps sites out there that are a bit cheaper when talking about disk space?

And native IPv6 would be nice as well.

Have a look at http://xlshosting.nl. You can add extra gigabytes to your desired vps. They also offer native ipv6

  2. Is your bottle neck storage or bandwidth? Both tend to be limited resources.

If there are many, non-popular files you need to provide, one thing to do is connect the server to your VPS over an openvpn tunnel and then use apache’s mod-proxy to serve those from your home server.

Du smider bare en mail så fixer vi da bare det :) … Det eneste du nok får svært ved lige at finde (i dk) er IPv6 native … hvis du finder det så sig endelig til :)

Try http://linuxvps.org. They’re fast, flexible and affordable.

OVH has a cheap offer with extensible disk space that might interest you:

I have not tried it yet, so I can’t say if it is reliable.

The standard answer is “use amazon s3.” Its much more expensive than a 200GB usb drive, though.

As of now, I abuse a second cheap web hosting provider that gives me sftp access and a lot of disk space, and I mount the data via sshfs to my Linode. Its against the second host’s TOS, so I can’t necessarily recommend the practice for any data you care about.

Gandi Hosting will let you add extra disk quota for 30 cents/GB without purchasing more shares, so you could have a 1 or 2 share server with huge amounts of disk if you wanted. They also have very good RAM and bandwidth for the price: 256MB of RAM and 5Mbps *unmetered* bandwidth per share. Their official pricing puts a share at $16/month, or $14/month if you pay annually, but they offer an excellent FOSS developer discount, which you should ask them for.

linode allows you to add more storage space to any sized setup you do
